WARRIORS GUIDE
Here on HB we do not require new members to have a lot of knowledge on Warriors in order to join us. That's what this thread is for! This thread is an overall resource for all, whether you have been a fan of Warriors for years, or you know basically nothing except "there's cats".Summary
To start it off, in case you don't really know what Warriors is, Warriors is a very long series of novels written by the collective group of writers known as Erin Hunter. This series has been going on for a very long time and has so many branch-off series, prequels, sequels, all of the above, that it is insane.
Warriors itself revolves around cats who live in the wild in groups known as clans, working together to survive in the wild. Most often times there will be multiple clans all right next to each other (there were 4-5 in the books) who both work together and fight against one another for their own survival. The clans have their own "government", hierarchies, laws, and religion that they all follow.Religion
The religion that the clans follow is the belief in Starclan and in the Dark Forest.
-- Starclan is essentially cat heaven to them. When a cat dies, their soul goes to the sky to live among the stars with their ancestors. Starclan is known for vaguely communicating with certain cats of the clans through dreams, or in some cases physical signs (in the books, things like a solar eclipse were often seen as signs from Starclan). The cats they communicate with primarily is Medicine Cats, who have a deeper connection to them than the rest of the clan. They also sometimes communicate with Leaders, as in this world not all cats have 9 lives; only Leaders of clans have 9 lives, and said lives are given to them by cats from Starclan when they become Leader.
- Typically in order to talk with Starclan, the clans will find a specific location somewhere around their lands where is the most peaceful, a place where it is far easier for Starclan to reach and communicate with the clans. Medicine Cats come to this location for their Medicine Cat Meetings, and cats set to become Leaders will come here in order to become Leader.
In the books, the clans had 2 main territory locations. In the forest territories they had the Moonstone, which was a large quartz crystal that glowed in moonlight found in a cave just outside of Windclan territory. And in the lake territories they had the Moonpool, which was a small pond hidden in the hills that reflected the stars at night.
-- The Dark Forest is basically cat hell. When a cat dies, if they were evil in their life, or were not at peace when they died, their soul is sent here unwillingly rather than to Starclan. If a cat is full of rage and hatred and unrest, they may end up here if they cannot let these things go before they die. In addition, if a cat is evil during their time alive, they are sent here. Being "evil" can range anywhere from murdering a clanmate to trying to destroy whole clans and many areas in between. The Dark Forest is often described and portrayed as a very dark and red-tinted forest full of shadows and fog, a nightmarish place of mystery, fear, and hatred.Hierarchy
The most common hierarchy that most clans live by is as follows:
- Leader: The Leader of a clan is a cat who stands at the head of their clans, making all large decisions, working with the Leaders of the other clans, and aiming to keep their clan prospering. They represent their clan at Gatherings, perform ceremonies in their clan for different events (rank changes, deaths, ect.), and can call clan meetings when announcements must be made. In order to become a Leader, a cat must have either been Deputy or, in very rare circumstances, were chosen by the Medicine Cat or by the whole of the clan to become Leader. When a cat is set to become a Leader, they must travel to the sacred place of the clans and sleep to dream with cats of Starclan, in which they will meet with 9 cats and recieve a life of each. When they return home, they will have 9 lives and the suffix -star will be replaced in their name. [Fireheart becomes Leader, is renamed Firestar]
- Deputy: The Leader's second-in-command, these cats are chosen by the Leader to help them with smaller tasks within the clan, such as overseeing Apprentice training, sending out patrols, and reporting any changes in the clan or in the territory to the Leader. They act as an advisor in difficult situations and are often gone to for advice, both by the Leader and the rest of the clan.
- Medicine Cat: The healers of the clan and the most spiritual, Medicine Cats hold a very important role within their clans. They are cats who have been trained in the ways of medicine, using herbs found in the wild and whatever resources they can to create treatments and cures for different ailments. In addition, they are the cats who communicate the most with Starclan and are the most likely to recieve messages and signs from them. Every season all of the Medicine Cats from all of the clans travel together to their sacred place in which Starclan's presence is the strongest, and they will fall asleep, speaking with cats of Starclan in their dreams. It is during these dreams that they will most often be given any signs or prophecies.
- There is typically only one Medicine Cat in a clan, but, as a cat begins to grow older, or if they just want some extra help, a Medicine Cat can watch over the younger cats of the clan, typically the Kits and younger Apprentices, and they can choose to take an Apprentice of their own. When a MC wishes to take an Apprentice, they will typically speak with the Leader and a clan meeting will be called, in which the MC will step forward and address the clan, speaking their proposition to the clan and to whoever they wish to take as their Apprentice. If the cat accepts, they become a Medicine Cat Apprentice and will train until their mentor believes that they are knowledgeable enough to become a full Medicine cat. If a MCA becomes a full MC before their mentor retires, the two will work together as MCs until the older of the two does retire or pass away.
- Warriors: The main body of all clans, Warriors are adult cats who have gone through the training of an Apprentice, have been given their full name, and serve the clan as...well...a warrior. They hunt, they patrol and mark their territory borders, they fight in battles should their clan ever go into battle or get into a skirmish with cats from other clans, and they protect their clan at the cost of their life. The minimum age that cats must be to become a Warrior is 12 moons, but this can vary.
- Apprentices: Young cats between the ages of 6 and 12 moons who are learning the ways of clan life. When Kits become Apprentices, their name suffix is changed to -paw and they are assigned to one Warrior who will act as their mentor. Apprentices will train with their mentors for a minimum of 6 moons, learning how to hunt, fight, and the way of the Warrior Code. When a mentor believes their Apprentice is skilled enough, a final assessment will be held to test the Apprentice's skills. If they succeed, the mentor will inform the Leader and the Apprentice will be promoted to a Warrior. When an Apprentice is promoted to a Warrior, their suffix -paw will be replaced with a different suffix to create their Warrior name, the suffix chosen by the Leader during the ceremony.
- Queens: The pregnant and nursing she-cats of the clan. Typically a pregnant she-cat will be moved from their current den to the clan Nursery where they can stay until they give birth, and during their time here they usually will not perform their normal rank duties or leave camp very often. When they give birth, most of the time a Queen will stay in the Nursery with her Kits until they become Apprentices, after which she will return to her previous rank. But there are sometimes she-cats who cannot stand being confined to a den that long and may return to their previous rank and duties before their Kits leave the Nursery.
- -- Permaqueens: A sort of branch-off rank from Queens, Permaqueens are cats (not always she-cats) who choose to stay in the Nursery and in camp rather than become a Warrior. Sometimes these are cats who have Kits and choose to stay, or sometimes young cats who have a lot more difficulty with the duties of Warriors will choose to become a Permaqueen. These cats usually stay and babysit the clan's Kits, and help the other Queens during their time in the Nursery. Sometimes, if a regular Queen decides to leave the Nursery early, her Kits will be watched over by the Permaqueens until they become Apprentices.
- Kits: The clans kittens! Kits stay in the Nursery, or confined to their camp, until they reach 6 moons and become Apprentices. All Kits have the suffix -kit added on to their name,
- Elders: Old cats who can no longer effectively perform their previous duties, or cats who have been injured or given some kind of disability that inhibits their abilities. While Elders are most often...ya know...old, there are some circumstances where a younger cat will become an Elder if they are seriously injured or something extreme happens to them.
Naming
In the rank descriptions you probably saw mentions of suffixes and prefixes and all that fun stuff. In Warriors, cats who live in clans have a certain naming system that they use.
Prefix: All cats are given a prefix that serves as the first half of their name. Most often this will be a word relating to nature, as obviously cats don't know human names for stuff. A cat's prefix can come from anything, such as things in nature that the cat resembles in appearance, the weather they were born during, a general theme, anything. [Examples: A pure black cat may be given the prefix Raven-/Crow-/Black-/Coal-/Ebony- ect.]
Suffix: The second half of a clan cat's name, this half is typically the only part of their name that changes. When a cat is born or is less than 6 moons old, they will be given the suffix -kit [Firekit]. When a cat becomes an Apprentice, their -kit suffix changes to -paw [Firepaw]. And when an Apprentice becomes a Warrior, their Leader will choose a new suffix for them that represents them as a cat. Sometimes this suffix will relate to their appearance, or maybe their personality, or sometimes an accomplishment they have achieved. [Examples: Fireheart, a cat who is kind and brave. Graystripe, a gray cat with tabby stripes. Tigerclaw, a cat who is a great fighter or may have longer claws than normal.] Finally, if a cat should ever become a Leader, when they recieve their 9 lives from Starclan their suffix will be changed to -star [Firestar].
Sometimes there are situations where a cat's name may change for other reasons. Sometimes if a cat goes through some sort of major injury, their Leader may choose to change their name to reflect this (Sparrowpelt in the books was renamed to Halftail after losing part of his tail to a badger).
In some cases a cat may request that their name be changed. Maybe because they think it should be changed due to something they did, or maybe their name doesn't fit them anymore, or they may just...not like their name. In these situations, a Leader may call a brief ceremony announcing the cat's new name to the clan. The Warrior Code
When it comes to laws, they have two sets of codes that they follow, the first of which being the Warrior Code. The Warrior code is essentially their list of laws in which the clans are expected to follow and can be punished for should they be broken.
Note: This list is the Warrior Code from the original books. Somewhat recently there was a change in the series where the Warrior Code was altered, but those will not be listed here. In addition, there are some differences between the book Warrior Code and the Warrior Code used on HB. HB's Warrior Code can be found in the Site Rules. This is here for reference to Warriors itself.
- Defend your Clan, even with your life. You may have friendships with cats from other Clans, but your loyalty must remain to your Clan, as one day you may meet them in battle.
- Do not hunt or trespass on another Clan's territory.
- Elders, queens, sick or injured cats and kits must be fed before apprentices and warriors. Unless they have permission, apprentices may not eat until they have hunted to feed the elders.
- Prey is killed only to be eaten. Give thanks to StarClan for its life.
- A kit must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice.
- Newly appointed warriors will keep a silent vigil for one night after receiving their warrior name.
- A cat cannot be made deputy without having mentored at least one apprentice.
- The deputy will become Clan leader when the leader dies, retires, or is exiled.
- After the death, retirement, promotion (to a leader status), or exile of the deputy, the new deputy must be chosen before moonhigh.
- A Gathering of all [five] Clans is held at the full moon during a truce that lasts for the night. There shall be no fighting among Clans at this time.
- Boundaries must be checked and marked daily. Challenge all trespassing cats.
- No warrior can neglect a kit in pain or danger, even if the kit is from a different Clan.
- The word of the Clan leader is the warrior code.
- An honorable warrior does not need to kill other cats to win their battles, unless they are outside the warrior code or if it is necessary for self-defense.
- A warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet.
- Each Clan has the right to be proud and independent, but in times of trouble they must forget their boundaries and fight side by side to protect the [five]. Each Clan must help the others so that no Clan will fall.
Exceptions // These are like mini-rules that branch off from listed rules
- Cats on their way to the Moonstone or Moonpool (aka the sacred location) are allowed to cross other Clans' territories to get to their destination.
- Cats may travel on other Clan territories if they have something to report or to ask for help.
- The code is flexible about leadership challenges. Cats may challenge a weak or cruel leader if their Clan is in danger, and if their leadership threatens the Clan, the code expects a warrior to challenge their leader.
Additional Rules // Rules that are not listed in the Warrior code, but they are still implemented.
Kits must stay in camp until they are apprenticed,[20] and are not allowed to hunt.
The safety of the Clan as a whole is more important than the safety of one cat.
Clans must not unite together to drive out another Clan.
Clans must not force another Clan to share territory.
Enemy patrols must not attack cats if they are on a mission that all four Clans have agreed upon.
Cats cannot eat when going to the Moonstone or Moonpool to speak with StarClan.Medicine Cat Code
The second code of the clans, this code is one that only applies to Medicine Cats and is implemented by Starclan, so breaking these codes tends to be harsher than the Warrior Code.
Note: Just like with the Warrior Code, this is the Medicine Cat Code from the original books, not from any new alters or from HB. HB's Medicine Cat Code can also be found in the Site Rules.
1. A medicine cat may not fall in love or take a mate.
2. A medicine cat may not have kits.
3. A medicine cat may only retire when their apprentice is ready to take their place.
4. A medicine cat shares dreams with only StarClan.
5. A medicine cat may only discuss dreams, prophecies, etc. with their leader or other medicine cats at the monthly meeting; dreams of an otherwise prophetic nature should not be disclosed to any outside parties, or any other cats in the Clan. The Gathering
A very important event in the books and in most Warriors-based sites, a Gathering is normally a monthly meeting held during the full moon where cats from all of the clans in the area meet in one specific location and discuss the state of their clans. This is one night during the month when peace is required, as no fighting is allowed to take place here, and bloodshed is absolutely forbidden. Typically, the night of the Gathering, a Leader will call the clan together and will pick a random number of cats, usually including multiple Warriors and some Apprentices if there are any, and these cats, plus the Deputy and Medicine Cat(s), will all travel together to the meeting place.
During the Gatherings there will usually be a little bit of time at the start while the clans all gather for everyone to mingle and talk and meet cats from the other clans. The Leaders of the different clans will then take perch on a higher spot, whether tree branches, rocks, or anything of the like, and they will call for silence when the meeting officially begins. The Leaders will take turns speaking, each talking about how their clan is doing, any recent rank changes or litter births, any events worth noting. They will also usually give warnings to the other clans if, say, a predator was spotted recently or if sickness has been going around.
When each Leader has said their piece, the Gathering will be dismissed, and the clans will all gather together and will travel back home.
Note: In the books, a Gathering would happen every full moon. But because Gatherings are decently sized events that involve many cats, on HB they won't be montly events, but seasonal ones. One gathering per season, ideally on the last full moon of the season.
